I'm mostly self taught although I got a great assignment in school once, take a black & white picture, turn it upside down and draw it. It's part of learning to see the object you draw in shapes and replicate those.
Hands and feet are still a big problem, especially when it comes to portraits without photo reference. :-)
But the only thing that improves skill is to draw, draw some more, and then draw even more.
I have a set of coloured pencils. That's about it. :-p
Wasn't very good at it when I was little, haven't drawn in colour much since but there are some photos I'd like to do in colour. Just have to start practicing.
