welcome to 2010!

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

i’m still not ready to read, listen to, or watch anything related to the outback bowl. the pain is just too fresh. yes, i know that’s a little on the ridiculous side, seeing as how i had nothing to do with the outcome, but that’s just the way i feel right now.

i still think 2010 will be a year of win, even if it didn’t start out that way. we’re not big on making new year’s resolutions here at urbantherapy, so i don’t have a list of things to share with you. i just know that 2010 will be full of epic awesomeness and i hope to share as much of it with y’all as i can.

merry new year!

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

this will likely be urbantherapy’s last post of 2009. it’s been an…interesting year. i don’t want to call 2009 a complete year of fail, b/c it wasn’t. there definitely was some awesomeness. it’s just that the bad stuff was really bad and therefore it kinda outweighed the good.

here’s wishing y’all a healthy and happy 2010. in the meantime, i’m going to leave you with this:

go u! :-)

reminder: urbantherapy’s annual draft gathering april 25

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

it’s the most wonderful time of the year, when we get to drool over mel kiper, jr.’s fabulous hair and lose count of how many times the phrase “tremendous upside” is mentioned. that’s right, kids: it’s time for the 2009 nfl draft!

the draft begins at 3pm next saturday (4/25). feel free to show up here anytime after 2pm. we’ll have snacks of some sort and i’ll probably make kool-aid to augment our non-alcoholic beverage selection. if you want booze, bring your own. attire is casual. pants are mandatory. jerseys are welcome.

if you plan on joining us, please leave a comment or send one of us an e-mail. i’d like to have some semblance of a head count so i can figure out snack quantities and such. thx.

football! woo!

save the date: urbantherapy draft gathering april 25

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

i’ve lost count of how many years we’ve hosted a gathering for day one of the nfl draft, so i’m hesitant to call this the (insert number) annual urbantherapy draft day. don’t let that stop you from marking your calendars for saturday, april 25. yes, i know that’s a month from today – that’s why i’m putting this up. yes, i know the nu spring game is that day. yes, i know some of you will be out of town and unable to join us. i love you anyway.

details to come as the date draws nearer.

happy black history month!

and what better way to start things off than by having coach epps being the second african-american head coach to win a super bowl? woo!

sunday night quick hits

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

i really need to think of more original post titles. that said…

–bears win! woo!

–nu v. mizzou in the alamo bowl. it’s actually cheaper to go to montego bay in march for a week to hang out with 5 bears players than it is to go on the officially sanctioned nu bowl tour for 3 days. that’s just not right. troy says i should save my free southwest flight and we can try to go back to san diego in february…but really, i wanna go to montego bay. i think it’d be awesome.

–congrats to donna & dave, who are…taking a vacation this week. oh, and i think they’re getting married or got married or something.

–chicago-area readers: join urbantherapy on saturday the 20th at dave & buster’s. i’ll be playing skee-ball and drinking overpriced liquor. i’m thinking around 8pm-ish. leave a comment or e-mail me if you’re interested, so troy & i can keep an eye out for you.

monday morning quick hits

Monday, December 1st, 2008

–troy is currently singing christmas carols in his early in the morning/barry white-esque voice while his mom plays the piano. it’s actually kind of cute. and no, i’m not recording this for a podcast, so you’ll just have to use your imagination.

–it’s december 1, which means today is the first day of my really long birthday celebration. i’ll be celebrating until the inauguration, so there’s plenty of time to make plans and prepare your tributes. ;-)

–today is also world aids day. if you haven’t been tested recently and feel as though you should be, today’s probably a good day to do so. if you’re not up for being tested, i’m sure there’s an organization out there that would appreciate your support. or you could just commit yourself to practicing safe(r) sex if you’re not already. and if you’re not, then wtf are you waiting for?

–i bought a bears polo while we were in minneapolis in august. i’ve worn it twice so far — once for the packers game a few weeks back and yesterday for the vikings game. my shirt is 0-2. i’m passing it on to troy in the hopes that he’ll have better luck with it. i bought this shirt a month or so ago at water tower, so maybe i’ll break it out and see what kind of luck i have with it.

–is it wrong that i’m sorta kinda hoping nu is selected for a bowl that i can fly to via southwest? i’ll have a free flight coming my way after tonight’s trip, so depending on where we end up, it might be more cost-effective to use the freebie.

–oh, and congrats to kelly & matthew. way to tie the knot after i do my thanksgiving post. you just had to make sure you got a separate shout-out, huh? :-)

i’m just sayin’…

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

this is pretty much where our heads are right about now:

go u!

bear down!

yes, we can!

no on 8!

we all scream for ice cream!

ok, so that last one has nothing to do with current events and everything to do with the oreo ice cream in the freezer, but let’s not belabor the point. :-)

manic monday? not so much…

Monday, June 9th, 2008

some reasons why today did not completely suck, even though it’s monday:

–the announcement about apple’s new iphone. pretty pretty shiny shiny! and yes, i’m thinking about getting one. i do sorta kinda need a new phone.

–cedric benson getting cut. this actually made me happier than the iphone news.

–reading an interview with ll cool j (happiness in and of itself) in which he basically admits that his last few albums sucked. this made me feel better about “magically acquiring” said albums, b/c they really did kinda suck. i still love him, though. (what? you didn’t actually think i’d given up my 20+ year crush, did you?)

–having an impromptu dinner at bennigan’s with troy.

–being able to bitch about the rain and not the heat. i’m sure troy’s happy about this one also, b/c i swear i complained all weekend about just how hot it was. he’s not happy about the prospect (ok, eventual reality) that i will whine about the heat all summer long.

–wireless printing. i’ve been sitting on the floor watching dvr’d food network shows and wanted to print a couple of recipes. and i did…without having to plug my laptop in.

and now, i’m going to turn on the a/c and read a magazine in bed. why? b/c i can.

hope your monday was a good one. here’s hoping tuesday doesn’t completely suck.

Scouting report

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

(Because, as usual, acb did it first and better)

TRoyal
DE/WR 6′6″ 198 lbs
Northwestern

Positives:
Smart player who is comfortable in his roles. High school did not have a football team, so is raw.
As a DE, possesses the burst off the corner to harass and bring down the QB. Long arms are an asset. On sweeps and tosses, plays contain well and knows to funnel the ball carrier back towards help. Does not get fooled on reverses and stays home. Because of WR background, can peel back to play zone defense and has intercepted more than one ball. Understands leverage and getting under a bigger lineman. Motor constantly running.
As a reciever, he will go up and get it, making him an ideal red-zone target. Great route runner and can feel the holes in zone coverage. Has deceptive speed and is a long strider. Will go across the middle. Catches the ball with his large hands, rather than letting it get into his body. Despite lanky frame, tough to bring down and uses stiff-arm well. Blocks well in the run game.

Negatives:
Extensive injury history. As a DE, does not possess the upper body strength to ward off road-grader type tackles. Sometimes overpursues on draws and screens. Seems to care about getting the QB and getting the sack instead of playing the run. Does not use hands well to shed blocks, and because of high center of gravity, may get pancaked a lot. Stamina a concern.
As a reciever, lacks the speed to truly burn DBs, and vision condition makes it difficult to go deep. Not consistent and experiences stretches of subpar play. Will need extensive training to overcome a playground mentality to playing the position.

Overall:
A student of the game and a great character player who can be a leader in the locker room and is respected by teammates. He isn’t getting much bigger, and lack of bulk could mean a short career. Best used in situations where his skill set are best utilized, like in the red zone or short yardage situations. On D, on obvious passing downs as a psas rush specialist. Could possibly be used as a pass-rushing LB in the 3-4. His injury history alone will be enough to scare teams away, as he’s also mentioned retirement more than once.

Draft Projection:
Free Agent, grad school
